The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bauchi state is seeking a tenure elongation for the embattled national chairman of the party, Ali Modu Sheriff.

According to Daily Trust, Alhaji Bashir Bukar Rimin Zayam, the Bauchi state publicity secretary of the party made the call during a press conference in Bauchi yesterday, March 9.
He said: “The new national chairman deserves support and cooperation, and no need to rush him. In his wisdom, he should look if three months are not enough to have a successful ward, state and national congress to elect new leaders. He should be allowed to add some months in order to have a successful convention.”
Rimin Zayam’s position was also seconded by a former governor of the defunct Gongola state, Ambassador Wilberforce Juta, and a former deputy governor of Sokoto state, Mukhtari Shagari, who both yesterday made a u-turn over their earlier decision that Sheriff must resign.
Speaking on behalf or the PDP rescue group Juta and Shagari commended the decision of the national executive committee (NEC) to allow Sheriff remain in office for three months within which a convention should be organized to elect new leaders.

“We believe that, given the consultations made leading to the final decision, the PDP is now poised to reposition itself both as a foremost and effective opposition party and as a better alternative platform for true democratic governance in our country.”
Meanwhile, the national executive committee of the PDP has resolved to end the tenure of its national chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff and other members of its National Working Committee on May 21.
The party would hold it national convention on that day in Port Harcourt, Rivers state and new national officers would be elected.
This was contained in a communiqué issued by Sheriff and party secretary, Prof. Adewale Olapido after the party’s NEC meeting.
According to Sheriff, the NEC approved the timetable for the party’s congresses and national convention.
