Just six months after dropping its volunteer driver service for patients, the Canadian Cancer Society (B.C. and Yukon division) is making changes to another program to preserve its viability at a time when the charity sector is facing declining donations. The Travel Treatment Fund gives subsidies to cancer patients who need to travel from rural and remote locations to major cancer centres. While patients were formerly eligible for grants ranging from $360 to $1,200 per year if they earned less than $50,000, new eligibility criteria means individuals applying for financial help must show they earn less than $20,000 a year (the cutoff rises with the number of people in each household).
