US presidential candidate Donald Trump has claimed that “Islam hates us” in one of his most incendiary comments so far.

The leading Republican also praised former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, calling him a “professional killer of terrorists” who should still be in power.

He said being a Muslim meant subscribing to “tremendous hatred”, adding that it was impossible to tell radical Islamists from peaceful worshippers.

Trump has already called for a complete ban on all Muslims entering the US if he becomes President.

In an interview with CNN, he was asked by host Anderson Cooper if he thought that Islam was at war with the West.

Trump replied: “I think Islam hates us. There’s a tremendous hatred there. We have to get to the bottom of it.

“We can’t allow people coming into this country who have this hatred of the United States and of people that are not Muslim”.

He said he was referring to radical Islam but had suspicions about all Muslims.

Asked about the Middle East, Trump called the Iraq War one of America’s “worst mistakes”.

Although he acknowledged that Saddam Hussein - hanged in 2006 - was “not a great guy”, he insisted that he did have his good sides.

He said: “If Saddam Hussein was there (Iraq) would we be better off? Absolutely. Saddam Hussein did one thing - he killed terrorists. He was a professional killer of terrorists”.
