Subaru has announced the new 2017 Impreza will be presented to the public for the first time at the New York Auto Show that will open its doors in less than two weeks. The fifth-generation Impreza is a monumentally important model for Subaru because it will usher in the modular architecture that’s set to underpin the replacements for the Outback, the Forester, and every Impreza off-shoot including the hot-rodded WRX STI and the rugged Crosstrek. Switching to the new modular platform will make the Impreza slightly lower and a little bit wider than the model that’s currently sitting in showrooms. Additionally, Subaru boldly promises it will be lighter, more efficient, more dynamic to drive, and safer. The dark teaser image published by Subaru suggests the 2017 Impreza will borrow a handful of styling cues from the two Impreza concepts shown last year in Tokyo and in Los Angeles, respectively. The sharp-looking hexagonal grille has been retained, but the headlights have been significantly toned down for the production model. Subaru promises we’ll see both the hatchback and the sedan body styles displayed in New York. The 2017 Impreza is also expected to inaugurate a brand new family of flat-four engines fitted with efficiency-boosting tech features like direct fuel-injection and cylinder deactivation. All models will come with the next generation of Subaru’s Symmetrical all-wheel drive system, and the company’s vaunted EyeSight technology will be offered on most trim levels.Related: Subaru confirms plans to build a second-gen BRZ Stay tuned, DT Cars will bring you full details and live images of the 2017 Impreza straight from the show floor in the Big Apple as soon as it’s unveiled.
