Johannesburg – Kaizer Chiefs’ season went from bad to worse after they suffered a 1-0 defeat against Asec Mimosa in their CAF Champions League first round encounter at the FNB Stadium on Saturday night.

Yannic Zakri scored the winning goal to hand the Ivory Coast side the advantage heading into the return leg.

Ten minutes into the game Chiefs enjoyed the first goal scoring opportunity of the tie, when George Maluleka found some space in the box but the midfielder failed to make solid contact with his shot.

A minute later Siphiwe Tshabalala spurned a golden opportunity to give Chiefs the lead. Tsepo Masilela whipped in a dangerous cross but the Amakhosi captain put his header wide.

As the first half went on the Ivory Coast team got more into the game but couldn’t create any meaningful attacks.

Two minutes before the hour mark the visitors managed to forge a lead. Zakri completed a brilliant header beyond Itumeleng Khune.

The goal sparked Chiefs into life.

Tshabalala came close with a set piece but his effort was well saved by the Asec goalkeeper.

Chiefs had further half-chances too, but could not capitalise and suffered a third straight loss in all competitions.
