According to information gathered from Punch, Njamasi Richard who was married with children jumped off from the two-storeyed building around 11pm on that day.

Some police officers from the Ipaja division were at his place to arrest him for a case of fraud.  A complainant identified as Ajagunjeun was said to have reported Richard at the police station for defrauding him of a sum of N24 million.

Police officers arrived at the block to arrest the deceased when he escaped through the back door of his flat and jumped off the building.

Richard was, according to reports, initially rushed to a private hospital where he was referred to Igando General Hospital where he eventually died on Tuesday.

A resident of the Abesan housing estate who gave identified himself as Akin said Richard’s action was a shock to all the neighbors.

The man and his family lived in Flat 6, which is on the topmost floor. He was not a youth as he had children old enough to be married. On that Monday, what we heard was that as he got the news that some policemen were climbing upstairs to arrest him, he jumped down from the back door of this flat.

“He might have been trying to evade police arrest, but he did not do it wisely,” he had said.

Superintendent Dolapo Badmos, the police public relations officer confirmed the incident saying Richard’s corpse had been deposited in a morgue. She also said investigation was ongoing.

She stated that “It is a case of sudden and unnatural death, which is under investigation. The suspect sustained injuries when he fell from his flat. He was rushed by the police to the Igando General Hospital, where he died while receiving treatment.”

Fraud seems to be the predominant occupation for most Nigerians these days. A man identified as Ibobo Frank (a.k.a James Simmons) was recently sentenced to two years imprisonment by Justice Kudirat Jose of a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja for defrauding two American women.
