Col. Inusa’s corpse was yesterday buried according to Islamic rites at the old Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) burial ground in Kaduna state. He was given the traditional military honour of three gun salutes.
The body of the deceased arrived at the old NDA cemetery around 11.45am from the 44 army reference hospital, Kaduna and was buried at noon.
Buratai, who described the late officer as a gallant and professional soldier who had served the country meritoriously said the army was in mourning.
The COAS further revealed that the army was very unhappy in the way and manner the colonel was killed.
“Col. Inusa was a great soldier. We feel the pains. Though death is inevitable and nobody can run away from it. I came in to represent my boss, the chief of Army Staff, because the Army is mourning one of us that has served this country greatly and we are not happy the way he died. But whatever happens, we shall see to the end of it all,” the army chief said.
Speaking also at the funeral, commander, Nigerian army school of infantry Maj.-Gen. Kasim Abdulkarim said Inusa, who served under his command, was a loyal, committed and hardworking officer.
He stressed that he would be missed by his colleagues, and pleaded with army officers and soldiers to take precautionary measures in safeguarding their personal security.
“I feel bad because the officer is directly under me. He was a loyal, committed and hardworking officer. We should take our personal security seriously,” Abdulkarim said.
In a related development, a pro-democracy and non-governmental organisation, human rights writers association of Nigeria (HURIWA), in a statement issued on March 30, condemned the colonel’s murder.
The group’s leader, Emmanuel Onwubiko, described Inusa’s abduction and murder as a tragic reminder of a close fatal encounter Lt.-Gen. Buratai had with alleged armed members of the Shiites movement in Kaduna that resulted in a clash that killed several people.
Onwubiko demanded a complete forensic crime investigation of the criminal act of kidnapping and killing of Inusa and make the culprits, their sponsors face the law.
