An under-construction flyover collapsed onto moving traffic in the busy center of Kolkata, India on Thursday afternoon, trapping scores of people and causing fatalities.

The collapse occurred in the West Bengal capital's Burrabazar neighborhood, close to the famous Ganesh Talkie's cinema in Girish Park.

Eyewitnesses cited by NDTV and the Asian News International (ANI) agency are quoted as saying as many as 150 people could be trapped under the rubble of the fallen concrete and steel bridge.

A reporter for ANI at the scene said there were "scores" of bodies under the rubble.

The National Disaster Response Force's OP Singh later told the agency that authorities did not have a death toll or information on how many are injured at this stage.

However, Reuters reported at least 10 people have died, citing police.

Raichand Mohta, a police officer at the scene, told Reuters: "The condition is pathetic. At this moment no one has any clue how many people are trapped."

ANI have posted several pictures and videos of the scene on social media.

The bridge has been under construction since 2009, and several deadlines for completion have been missed, Reuters reported.

The collapse is likely to put the often lax safety standards of Indian construction projects under even greater scrutiny.
