Economic crunch: Akpabio defends APC government, read what he said

EFCC has arrested three key men to the former governor of Akwa Ibom state, Godswill Akpabio.

Senator Godswill Akpabio has defended the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government.

According to Daily Post, Akpabio, who is the Senate minority leader on March 31, urged Nigerians not to blame the current economy quagmire on the APC-led government.

Speaking to newsmen in Arochukwu, Abia state, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain said Nigeria’s current economic problem was a global occurrence caused by the constant fall in oil prices at the global market.

Akpabio, who requested for the diversification of the economy, said the global economic meltdown is being felt more by Nigerians because the country runs a mono-economy built around oil.

The senator, who is the former governor of Akwa Ibom state, charged the government at the centre to focus on other sector of the economy like mining, agriculture and entrepreneurship.

He also enjoined the federal government to drive in foreign direct investment in order to improve the country’s revenue base.

“So, what has happened here is that with the massive failure, what we call oil glut in the market, the oil price has reduced below what we expected in the last 20 years. That automatically has affected our economy.

“It has nothing to do with which administration is in power. It has something to do with resources to be able to deliver the dividend of democracy,” Akpabio said.

Akpabio, who acknowledged the grave effect of the economy crunch on the citizenry, urged Nigerians to exercise patience and support the present administration in the interest of the country.

“The country belongs to all of us and if the country collapses on our heads, it means that we bequeath nothing to our children,” he added.

Akpabio has also pleaded with Nigerians to because of the democratic principles the party has followed in recent times.

Daily Trust reports that the Senate minority leader made the plea when he spoke with journalists in Abia state after an inter-denominational thanksgiving service in honour of Senator Mao Ohuabunwa for his victory at the Abia north senatorial rerun election.
