– Ex-deputy Senate president says Nigerians had gotten tired of the PDP

– Adds that he saw the loss of ex-president Goodluck Jonathan coming

Former deputy Senate president, Ibrahim Mantu says ex-president Goodluck Jonathan did not do things appropriately.

Senator Ibrahim Mantu, a former deputy president of the Nigerian Senate, has revealed the reason behind the Peoples Democratic Party’s loss in last year’s presidential elections.

In an exclusive interview with Premium Times, Mantu maintained that Nigerians had already gotten tired of the ruling PDP after 16 years of continuous rule and wanted a change of administration.

When asked what it was that worked for APC during the election that did not work for PDP, he said: “People were already tired of PDP. PDP was suffering from hangover, fatigue. Sixteen years in power uninterrupted is not easy in a country like Nigeria.

“Then, PDP became over drunk with power. We were staggering. We missed our road. We were no longer respecting the people. Virtually everywhere, APC votes came from PDP members who were angry with the party.”

Mantu also said that he saw Jonathan’s loss coming, hence the reason he was not too keen on the campaign prior to the election.

Goodluck Jonathan lost by surrounding himself with mediocrities.

As a big player in the PDP, he said: “I knew now. Did you see me there? If I had not known, you would have seen me neck deep in the campaign. At least, I am not a small player in the PDP.”

On the very things that worked against ex-president Goodluck Jonathan, he said that the former Bayelsa state governor worked with mediocrities who did not know how to play the game, hence his fatal loss during the March 28 presidential election.

“Jonathan lost because he refused to work with people who know the game. Most of the people Jonathan worked with were mediocres and amateurs. At a point in time, he even left the party machinery and employed some consultants to work for him,” Mantu explained.

Nigerians wanted a change of baton after 16 years with the PDP.

Meanwhile, the ex-president’s supporters are reportedly in trouble again as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it has traced N320m to the account of the Goodluck Support Group, a collation of campaign groups, which powered Mr Jonathan’s re-election bid for in 2015.

According to a report by The Punch, the money which was sourced from the account of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) was distributed to the group over 100 pro-Jonathan groups headed by Jonathan’s Special Adviser on Political Affairs, Prof. Rufai Alkali.

There are also several other allegations against the ex-president, especially the $2.1billion arms deal procurement scandal for which ex-National Security Adviser (NSA), Colonel Sambo Dasuki (rtd) is being tried in court.
