Yakubu Gowon bows out of corporate world, replaced by Yar’adua’s appointee

Nigeria’s former military head of state, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd) has retired from the boardroom after many years of being the chairman of insurance firm, IGI.

Gowon, 81, has been replaced by a Nigeria’s former head of service of the federation, defence minister and secretary to the government of the federation, Alhaji Yayale Ahmed.
The retirement of Gowon is due to a directive by the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) which requires non-executive directors who have served up to nine years on the board of insurance companies to quit.

Two other directors of the leading insurance firm also retired alongside Gowon. They are the founding director-general of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, Apostle Hayford Alile and Mrs Olubunmi Olowude.
Alhaji Ahmed who celebrated his 64th birthday days before his appointment, was unanimously ratified by the company’s shareholders at its 23rd Annual General Meeting in Lagos.
The board also endorsed four other individuals as non-executive directors. They are Mr Gaffar Kayode Animashawun, Mrs Awuneba Ajumogobia, Mr Augustine Oluyemisi Olorunsola and Mr Kanayo Chuks Okoye.
Last week, Gowon stated that in order for Nigeria to develop, there must be a plan and focus for industries. He warned that if the food industry is not developed, Nigeria will not be food sufficient.
