All the things that can go wrong a week to my wedding
– Just when your hopes for Nollywood was rising, a movie like A Week to my Wedding comes around and dashes it all to the ground.
– Starring Belinda Effah and Iyke Ogbonna, the movie is about a young unemployed graduate Lilian Mbah played by Effah who navigates the shark-infested waters of the Lagos job market.
Lilian can’t seem to catch a break, as she is rejected at every point. An old friend she meets on the street decides to help and sends her off to yet another interview. At that interview, The “CEO” of the company, offers tit-for-tat, which Lilian politely rejects. When she narrates her experience to the friend who gave her the contact to begin with, she is scolded for being a fool and not using what she has to get what she wants.

Eventually, despite her very poor school results, hence all the rejections, “her beauty qualifies her”, a statement actually uttered by the interviewer, for a job at last. But it comes at a price.
Despite the –eventually –compelling story-line, the movie is riddled with a lot of bad acting that switching off the TV and watching the blank screen would have been a better option.
The story build-up was unnecessarily long; in fact, just plain unnecessary. Twenty minutes in, and with all Lilian’s job interviews, it left one wondering where the wedding in title featured in the plot.
But it did come in the end. After we – actually Lilian is made to go through all sorts of sexual harassment to secure and then maintain her employment. The writer tries for an edgy take on “the casting couch” – where someone in power, usually a man, forces a woman (or a young boy) to sleep with them to gain favors.

Where you would expect the usual “every day for the thief” ending to the story. This one comes with a twist that wasn’t as powerful as the filmmakers imagined.
A Week to my Wedding was directed by Tissy Nnachi. It would make for a great background noise while you do your laundry on a weekend or trying to sleep
