With tech, function trumps form. You should still buy your gadgets based on how well they actually work. With some devices, though, this isn’t an either/or situation.
So, because it’s always nice to have a device you can look at fondly, we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite current gadgets that work well and look great. They aren’t cheap, but if you want to class things up a bit, they might be worth the premium.
Apple MacBook
APYes, the 12-inch MacBook is a bit overpriced. Yes, it could stand to do better than a Core M processor, however improved it may be. Yes, there’s a chance you’ll despise its keyboard. Yes, it only has one port. These are issues.
If you can find it in you to put them all aside, though, you’ll be left with what’s very likely the most portable mainstream laptop in existence. This year’s refresh is still thinner and lighter than any of its peers, with a gorgeous 2304x1440 display and the same clean, spare finish you’d expect from an Apple laptop. If you don’t need a powerhouse, and have a little cash to burn, it should be a pleasure.
Apple MacBook (256GB), $1,289, available at Amazon.
Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge
Tech Insider/Antonio Villas-BoasThe “edge” part of Samsung’s Galaxy S7 Edge serves little purpose beyond looking elegant, but it serves that purpose very well. How Samsung managed to make its big, 5.5-inch display as easy to hold as it has is a feat of engineering. Beyond that, the rest of the phone is as premium as its curve-less sibling — there’s a gorgeous screen, a top-notch camera, fast internals, a long-lasting battery, and an aluminum, water-resistant body. Just try to ignore TouchWiz.
Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge (32GB, Unlocked), $799.99, available at Best Buy.
Bang & Olufsen BeoPlay A1
AmazonDanish firm Bang & Olufsen has melded quality sound with high-end design for years now, and the rounded, aluminum-clad BeoPlay A1 successfully carries that sentiment over to the world of ultra-portable Bluetooth speakers. It is decidedly not another Jambox clone. More importantly, it performs like a $250 speaker should, with clear mids, good volume, a surprising amount of bass, and more than 20 hours of battery life.
Bang & Olufsen BeoPlay A1, $249, available at Amazon.
