After the PDP lost the presidential elections in 2015, coupled with most states in the North, the party has been struggling to find its bearing.

As it is the norm in Nigeria’s politics, many of the party chieftains defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) immediately the party lost at the centre.

Those who have remained in the party to rebuild it from the scratch are struggling to agree on the right way to go about it.

Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff came into the fray on Tuesday, February 16 after the former acting chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus stepped aside.

Since he came on board, the former Borno governor has shown his willingness to take the party to greater heights.

Financial Capability: At a time when the PDP is in dire need of finances to help rebuild the party, Alhaji Sheriff comes in handy with his deep pocket that stems from the fact that he is a known billionaire from his days as the number one contractor in the ministry of defence in the 1980s in Lagos before his foray into politics. Sheriff has established himself in business before joining politics and has the resources to help the PDP find its bearing instead of running from pillar to post to source for funds.

2. APC dominance in the North: If there is any politician that is needed now for the PDP to make appreciable inroads in the North, then Sheriff is the right man for the job. The PDP needs to take the bull by the horn and strategically break the dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the North because of the voting population in the region which is very important for the party’s future. Sheriff is also a popular and well-known politician in the region.

3. Respect of party chieftains: It is clear that Sheriff commands the respect of major party leaders, chieftains and political office holders under the PDP. This is very important for anyone who is poised to lead the PDP to greatness.
