Mourinho, Rodgers and other managers sacked from the EPL 2015/2016 season
With the conclusion of the 2015/2016 English Premier League season where Leicester City despite all odds, won the league title in an unbelievable and spectacular fashion.
In the cause of the season, several managers were fired including the Special One from Chelsea. Rafa Benitez made a come-back after he was earlier sacked in
NAIJ.com Sports take a look at the managers that were sacked or their exit confirmed during the season and how that affected the teams they left.
1. Quique Flores (Watford): Sacked 14th May 2016: Flores led Watford to 13th position this season but his exit was confirmed just before the last game of the season. In truth, Flores was one of the better managers this season continuing with most of the player promoted from the Championship ala Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney in attack.
He also led the Hornets to the FA Cup semi-final beating holders Arsenal along the way. After his exit was confirmed at the end of the season, he saw his side draw 2 – 2 with Sunderland in the final game of the season.
2. Roberto Martinez (Everton): Sacked,12th May, 2016: Martinez has endured a poor season by all standards. If fan base is put into consideration Everton could be ranked in the top six teams in the country.
Roberto Martinez
Despite possessing some of the best young players in the league; Ross Barkley, Gerard Deulofeu, Romelu Lukaku, Martinez could only lead Everton to 11th place. Just after his sack one game to go in the season, Everton turned in their best performance of the season as they defeated 3 – 0 against Norwich.
3. Remi Garde (Aston Villa): Mutual Consent , 29th March, 2016: Garde left by mutual consent when he was it was impossible to keep the the Midland club up in the Premier League as the team was lacking all the tools to survive relegation.
Remi Garde
In truth, Villa played better under him but relegation was inevitable as players became uninterested.
4. Steve McClaren (Newcastle): Sacked, 11th March, 2016: One of the most ridiculous decisions of the season was made by Newcastle board who kept McClaren as manager when it was obvious he was tactically inept and out of his depth.
How he came to coach England one time is still baffling…
Rafa Benitez came and steadied the ship somewhat (though he waited till his fifth game to secure a first win) but the appointment came too late.
Newcastle actually played some of the best football in the league after the former Real Madrid’s man appointment but he should have been appointed earlier or to put it in better terms; McClaren should have been sacked earlier.

5. Jose Mourinho (Chelsea): Sacked, 17th December, 2015: The second biggest story of the 2015/2016 Premier League season was the sacking of ‘The Happy One’ Jose Mourinho whose second coming was expected to usher in Chelsea’s greatest period.
Jose Mourinho
The biggest story of the season was Leicester City winning the Premier League (in case you weren’t sure).
After winning the title in his second season, Mourinho was supposed to be the top dog in England (until Pep Guardiola arrived at least) but Leicester City and his side’s poor form meant he should have left.
Despite his exit, Chelsea did not dramatically improve but at least they won two games in succession under Guus Hiddink. His sack was well timed but some will feel it should have come earlier after he lost the plot in the whole Eva Carniero case.
6. Garry Monk (Swansea): Sacked, 9th December, 2015: Despite leading Swansea to their highest point tally in his first full season as head coach, Monk was dismissed after his side lost seven games in a ten game run.
His replacement after a while was former Udinese coach Francis Guadolin who improved the side and favoured a more counter-attacking approach over Monk’s favoured passing approach.
Good decision from the Swansea board as the team finished 12th this season. Andre Ayew was also a shinning light in the team.
7. Tim Sherwood (Aston Villa): Sacked – Sunday 25th October, 2015: When Sherwood helped Villa survive relegation in the 2014-2015 season, it looked he would take the team places this season but after the first five games it became clear he should leave.
Tim Sherwood was always an animated character on the touchline
After losing six consecutive matches, which left the team 19th in the table, Sherwood was sacked but even his dismissal could not help one of the worst team’s in the Premier League era.
The fault does not all lie at his feet, the board and most especially the players were to blame for playing like they were uninterested. They were so poor the club cancelled its end of the season awards.
Jordan Ayew was a shinning light for the club in a very dark period.
8. Brendan Rodgers (Liverpool): Sacked – Sunday October 4, 2015: Why Rodgers was allowed to spend close to $150 over the summer and be sacked just eight Premier League games into the season is baffling.
It was clear the man had been set up to fail after he was given Christian Benteke who did not suit his style of play while he saw another key figure in Raheem Sterling leave under a cloud.
Brendan Rodgers, the former Liverpool boss
His replacement was Jurgen Klopp who the fans have endeared to while he has revived the team’s fortunes and an eight place finish.
Liverpool would also play in the Europa League final, something which looked unimaginable if Rodgers was still available. At least he gave us Joe Gomez before he was sacked.
9. Dick Advocaat (Sunderland): Resigned – Sunday 4th October, 2015: never wanted to continue into the new season but was begged by fans and the board after keeping the Black Cats in the Premier League with a strong end to the season before.
He resigned early in his reign when he was he was not doing enough for the club. Made few signing and did not splash the cash.
He is still revered in Tyneside and his replacement eventually helped keep Sunderland in the Premier League with Norwich City and Newcastle relegated.
