Williams gang hit list: four arrested
Durban - Four men believed to be part of the notorious Williams gang have been arrested in what police describe as a “victory for law enforcement”.
After rumours of an alleged “hit list” which included the names of several Pietermaritzburg police officers said to be involved in the death of gang leader Ian Williams, police worked tirelessly to crack the robbery syndicate and captured the last remaining members of the gang.
According to a police source, a crack team of Hawks and Combined Action Team members, acting on a tip-off, arrested the four men in the early hours of Friday on the N3 near Ballito.
It is believed the men had stolen a bakkie from the home of a KwaDukuza resident and were heading to their base in Durban when they were nabbed.
The source confirmed officers had been lying in wait on the N3 for about four hours when the stolen Toyota bakkie transporting three gang members was pulled over.
Another suspect was following the bakkie in a VW Golf 7.
The driver of the Golf allegedly attempted to run over police flagging down the bakkie.
Police opened fire on the driver, wounding him. All four men were expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
In the vehicles, police found gloves, handcuffs, tools, car computer boxes, a jamming device to block the signal from a vehicle’s tracking system, and about half a dozen car keys.
Williams was shot dead in a gun battle with police on April 30.
Williams and accomplice, Zwazi Ngubo, were killed, while Williams’s brother, Derrick and Sbongiseni Marikeng were wounded and are under police guard in hospital.
The gang has been linked to about 100 cases of housebreaking, business robbery and car theft in Pietermaritzburg and surrounding towns in the Midlands since January.
The police source said the gang may be linked to house robberies in Durban.
