FCA trademarks a name that could mean an Alfa Romeo SUV is on the way

The folks at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles [NYSE:FCAU] have been busy at the trademark office.

Though the automaker has yet to trademark the name for the upcoming Stelvio SUV, the brand has added the name Kamal into the mix.

It's a moniker that will likely be applied to the growing lineup of Alfa Romeo SUVs, most likely affixed to the smallest of these high-riding models.

The Kamal trademark, discovered on the United States Patent and Trademark Office registry by Autoblog, was filed about a month ago.

It's been granted to FCA, yet it should point to an Alfa Romeo product as this name was previously used on an SUV concept from the Italian brand back in 2003 (pictured above). The Kamal would follow on the heels of the larger Stelvio, and both would be joined by an even larger SUV at some point.

Of course, FCA could end up simply using the Kamal name for a new concept previewing one of its upcoming SUVs.

Also, we assume Alfa Romeo won't try to sell the Kamal in Finland. It almost sounds like the Finnish word Kamala, which means "terrible."
