Cape Town man arrested for having cannabis oil
A Cape Town man has appeared in court after some cannabis oil was allegedly found during a raid at his home by 10 policemen.
|||Cape Town - A Noordhoek man has appeared in the Simon’s Town Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of cannabis after a raid at his home on Saturday morning by 10 policemen who arrived in five vans.
They arrested Simon Hill and took him the Fish Hoek police station after allegedly finding some cannabis oil.
On Monday, Hill’s lawyer, William Booth, said the case had been postponed until July 5. However, he planned to make an application to have it withdrawn.
Booth said he still needed to get the evidence and the police docket.
“Then I will make representations to have it withdrawn.”
He said Hill had been released from custody on Saturday and was out on a warning.
Regarding the large police contingent used in the raid, Booth said he thought it was uncalled for such an offence “which might not even be an offence”.
Soon after the raid, Hill’s wife, Sonette Hill, set up an online petition to be delivered to President Jacob Zuma, which said: “My husband is a healer not a criminal.”
The site, which she later deleted, was shared widely on social media.
It read: “At 2am this morning, we had a visit by 10 policemen, who arrived in five cars. Thankfully our dogs behaved. An informer had told the police that we sell medical cannabis oil.
“Thankfully, on my insistence, after offering a round of tea and coffee they searched our entire six-bedroomed home in Noordhaven without waking our three children (miracle!) They did wake our international AirBnB guest!
“They left with my darling husband in the back of the van to Fish Hoek police station. They found three small jars of oil and two small Indica plants. Price to pay for healing people? I will have to educate our three boys about the way the world works when they wake up to find dad missing.”
By Monday, the petition had 2 250 signatures.
