Attacks on oil pipelines: Buhari under fire for seeking GEJ’s help
Sequel to the renewed attacks on oil installation by militants in the Niger Delta region, there has been insinuation that President Muhammadu Buhari may approach his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan to intervene in the situation which is threatening to plunge the Nigerian economy further into crisis.
Media reports that Buhari may approach Jonathan for help over the resurgence of militancy in the Niger Delta.
The Niger Delta Avengers, a newly formed militant group, have threatened to cripple the nation’s economy by launching attacks on oil and gas installation in the Niger Delta region.
The group has claimed responsibility for attacks that reportedly resulted in a sharp drop in the nation’s oil output from 2.2m to 1.65m barrels per day and has vowed to continue its attack of pipeline in spite of President Muhammadu Buhari’s recent threat to deal with pipeline vandals.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Mudoch Agbinibo, the group said: “We want the public to know that despite the heavy presence of military operatives, our activities can’t be stopped and it just a waste of funds and time to make the Nigerian military protect oil installations.”
The rumoured meeting between Buhari and Jonathan comes after the UK urged the president to deal with the root causes of the militancy because a military confrontation could end in “disaster”.
However, the reports that Buhari is seeking the help of his predecessor to quell the resurgence of militancy in the Niger Delta region has elicited reactions from some Nigerian who say Buhari is confused and has ran out of ideas on how to handle the situation.
However, some on the other side of the divide have faulted claims that Jonathan can remedy the situation, adding that Jonathan failed to proffer solutions to problems during his administration.
