|||Cape Town - The man accused of shooting his 72-year-old mother on Friday 13, allegedly did so while she read the Bible.
Alfred Zwartz, 40, on Monday had his mental status evaluated by a medical doctor before he could step into the dock at the Athlone Magistrate’s Court.
Doctors confirmed Zwartz, who was dressed in an orange hooded top, was mentally fit to stand trial. He is facing a charge of attempted murder.
Prosecutors are set to prove that on May 13, while his mother Winnie sat reading her Bible inside their Oasis Street, Hazendal home, he shot her in the head and arm.
She is currently in a critical condition in hospital.
Prosecutor Xolani Ntonzini sketched the picture of the afternoon of the shooting.
He said the victim had been lying and reading the Bible at 2.45pm when the accused walked into the room and fired shots at her.
He then handed himself over to police and gave them his licensed firearm.
The mother and son had been living in the house together.
No light has been shed on the motive for the shooting.
The accused will remain in custody until June 3 when he is expected to apply for bail.
