These fierce-looking electric motorcycles are fun, affordable, and durable
A California-based company is working to make electric motorcycles just as popular as electric cars.
Since 2007, Alta Motors has worked to bring two electric motorcycles to mass-production.
They're just about here.
Check out what this motorcycle company of the future has in store:
Alta has two models. The Redshift MX and the Redshift SM.
Aaron Brown/Tech InsiderThe Redshift MX is for off-road use and the Redshift SM is equipped to be road-legal.
At $15,000, the off-road version is also $500 cheaper than the on-road bike.
Both bikes are pretty much the same, except for a few key features.
Aaron Brown/Tech InsiderFrom the ground up, both bikes were built with racing and reliability in mind, but the MX is the go-to for off-road use.
Alta told Tech Insider that the MXs would come before the SMs, because the road bike still has to go through Federal approval for road use. If you live in California and you were pre-order an MX right now, you'd likely take delivery of it sometime in July, the company said.
The main differences between the road-going SM model bike and the MX is that the MX has aggressive off-road tires and lacks lights and mirrors.
Aaron Brown/Tech InsiderAlso, the MX has a top speed of 80 MPH, 5 MPH slower than the SM's 85 MPH top speed.
