NLC strike: Protest rocks Abeokuta
– The chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC) Ogun state chapter Comrade Akeem Ambali, has led a protest in Abeokuta over the removal of petrol subsidy
– The leadership of the association of private schools proprietors have issued a statement denouncing the strike action by NLC
– Many in Ogun state have condemned the strike action by the NLC alleging that there is a selfish motive behind the industrial action
Residents and workers in Ogun state, south west, Nigeria were seen going about their normal businesses on Wednesday morning, May 18, in defiance to calls by the Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC) for an industrial action.
Investigation within Abeokuta metropolis showed that schools, banks and other offices are open for business.

Also, our correspondent can reports that normal activities were going on at the state secretariat, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta as workers were seen at their various duty posts going about their normal businesses.
Meanwhile, there was a protest in Abeokuta led by the chairman of the state Labour Congress, (NLC) Comrade Akeem Ambali.
The protest which comprised of mainly workers of the affiliated unions commenced from the NLC Secretariat, Abiola way and moving through MKO Abiola stadium to Kuto roundabout and down to Kuto road and had a stopover at the state igh court, Isabo.
There was a mild drama at the high court area as the protesters were forcing shops and workers to join them in the protest, which some vehemently rejected.
Many people condemned the actions, asking them to go back to their various offices, alleging that the was not fighting for the masses but their pockets, while other praised them.
Findings across the state revealed that schools in Sagamu down go Ijebu Ode to Ijebu Ilese, Ijebu Imushin, Ijebu Ife to Itele down to Ogbere and Abigi and Ibiade in Ogun Waterside are opened with most teachers around while students were seen in two’s and there’s roaming the street.
Similar situation was gathered in Itori, Ewekoro, Papalanto, Ifo to Sango down to Iju Ota, Obere Ota, Iyana Igbesa, Owode, Oke Odan, Ajilete, Ihunbo, Ilase, Idiroko, Ibatefin, Agosasa to Ipokia down to Ifoyintedo and Tube, schools were opened and students are in their various classrooms going about their educational activities.
Our correspondent gathered from a source that leadership of the association of Private schools proprietors had issued a statement denouncing the strike action by NLC.
It would be recalled that the state government had last week engaged the leadership of both the NLC and the TUC in the State in a meeting, pleading with them not to join the strike action called upon by their National body.
At the meeting presided over by the state deputy governor, Chief (Mrs) Yetunde Onanuga, the union leaders declared that they had to obey directives from their national body, pledging that, it won’t affect the smooth relationship between the state government and the union body in the.
In some schools visited by our correspondent, Revd. Kuti Memorial School and Nawair Ud Deen high school, both in Isabo Nawair Ud Deen road, Abeokuta, students were seen inside their classrooms while some were roaming the streets.
Speaking with our correspondent, some of the teachers, who pleaded anonymity disclosed that they are already at their duty posts, suggesting that there was no need for the strike action.

A resident, Ms Yetunde Giwa said staying at home was not the solution, but to look at a way to cushion the suffering of the masses, adding that: “there is no gain without pains”.
An official of a new generation bank said they were not part of those calling for the strike.
“At least, you can see for yourself that activities are going on here and other banks around here. Oke Ilewo is the economic nerve centre of Abeokuta, you can attest to it that normal activities are going on everywhere, no cause for alarm. We are not part of the strike and will be never be”, the banker insisted.
As at the time of filling this report, the NLC protesters were still moving round the town, carpeting the federal government for their insensitivity about the masses.
