|||Durban - The City of Durban is hosting the Water Institute of Southern Africa (WISA) 2016 conference and exhibition, in partnership with innovative water-related companies, at the Durban International Convention Centre.
There were over 100 expert speakers addressing issues that affect water and sustainable implementations in-place amid the drought crisis.
The conference is a four-day affair and will conclude on 19 May 2016. This year's theme is ‘Water-The ultimate constraint.’
The World Wide Fund for nature (WWF) also launched their 2016 water facts and future report on Tuesday afternoon stressing the importance of conservation of water in South Africa amid the drought.
“For most South Africans in our country, water does not come from a tap. Water resources are important for the WWF as we care about our natural resources,” said Christine Colvin, Freshwater senior manager of WWF-SA.
Colvin added that South Africa is worse off than Namibia due to the low inputs and large population despite the fact that Namibia experiences half of SA’s average annual rainfall.
According to the WWF, South Africa is a biodiversity superpower as it is one of three countries in the world that occupies more than A hundred types of ecosystems, although, many are under threat. Threats to our natural vegetation is a result of alien invasive vegetation consuming more water.
The MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional affairs for KZN, Nomusa Dube-Ncube addressed media at the opening press brief.
“All options-including that of desalination are being considered in a bid to ensure continuous water availability for South Africans,” Ncube said.
