Nationwide strike: NLC holds massive protest in Abuja (photos, video)

– The NLC says the strike will be sustained despite the federal government’s threats of no work, no pay
Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, today, May 18 witnessed a major protest organised by the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
The protest was lead by NLC president, Comrade Ayuba Wabba and other senior labour leaders
The protest which was led by the leaders of the major unions, was attended by members of the union who chanted solidarity songs as they moved around the streets of Abuja.

The workers wore their uniforms, waved the NLC flags and displayed banners calling on the federal government to reverse the petroleum subsidy removal which triggered the price in the increase of fuel price from N87 per litre to N145 per litre.

Addressing journalists during the protest, NLC president, Comrade Ayuba Wabba said the union is protesting and called for strike because the fuel price increase has increased the price of goods and service across the nation.

He made mention of the fact that even the bag of rice in Nigeria today is above the minimum wage in the country.
His words: ”We have made the point clearly that it doesn’t matter how long it will take for these issues to be addressed.
”The challenge is also that the price that have been fixed is indicated on the exchange rate and the price of crude oil at the global market.”
Some of the protesters reserved harsh words for Nigeria’s ruling party
According to Comrade Wabba, until when the federal government initiate policies that addresses the challenges and also make efforts to solve the issues on ground, the NLC will not back down.
”This is a product that God has blessed us with, and I think part of the problem of why we have resulted to tgis last resort is also the corruption that has made our refineries not to work.
”And they will continue because until all of us come together to drive the process of changing the policy of depending on importation and getting our refineries to work to make sure that we don’t depend on importation.” Comrade Wabba opined.
