NLC Strike: Read what is happening in Zamfara
– The NLC strike continued in its second day but compliance is weak
– Zamfara workers went about their normal duties
– The workers said the strike action was not the solution to Nigeria’s problem
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) declared a nationwide strike over the removal of fuel subsidy and increment in the price of petrol but Zamfara workers do not seem to be participating on the second day.
Leadership reports that government and private workers across Zamfara State were seen going to work as early as 7am on Thursday, May 19.

Workers were seen freely attending to their normal official calling, while commercial vehicles were also plying major roads in Gusau for passengers.
Bello Sani who is a civil servant working with the state ministry of Education noted that Ramadan was fast approaching and the strike action would only bring suffering and hardship to the people.
“If we accept to go on the fruitless strike, we may end up missing our salaries in the time of need.”
He said that the NLC has shown that it was not genuinely concerned about the welfare of the people because if they were, they would have called for a strike action when petrol was being sold for N200-250 per litre.
He said the NLC’s decision was worthless and equally a show of hypocrisy as the decision to hike the price was reached with union’s collaboration.

Another worker with the ministry for local government, Mansur Isa said that a strike action was not the best way to handle the situation because the federal government has no option in the face of the prevailing harsh economic downturn.
He added that, “government needs fund to finance development, while the global market for crude oil is unfavourable to the economy.”
The federal government through Babachir David Lawal who is the secretary to the government of the federation in a statement asked ministries to invoke the no work no pay policy and urged workers to go about their normal duties.
