Washington - An officer from the New York Police Department (NYPD) has shot and killed a man with a knife in Manhattan, local media reported on Wednesday.

The reasons behind the deadly shooting in downtown New York City remain unclear, as well as if anyone is in custody in connection with the incident, NBC New York reported.

The NYPD has confirmed the shooting in a Twitter message.

“There has been a police involved shooting near 49th Street & 8th Avenue in Manhattan,” the message stated.

Police are still present at the scene of the incident, according to media reports.
