1,000 CCTV cameras in Lagos not functioning

The 1,000 Close Circuit Television (CCTV) Cameras installed to provide security in Lagos state have stopped functioning for some years now, the Lagos state government has said.
Olufemi Odubiyi, the state commissioner for science and technology, disclosed on Friday, May 20, that the state government has taken over the 1,000 CCTV cameras and is in a bid to rehabilitate them so that they could be functional.
He disclosed that the state government is planning to deploy additional 13,000 CCTV cameras to police the state under the Smart City Project of the state government.

Odubiyi said the Smart City Project is about delivering tomorrow’s infrastructure today, saying that “this project is an initiative of this administration aimed at providing state-of-the-art ICT infrastructure to deliver social amenities to the citizens such as Security, Communication and Collaboration.
“The objective of the project is the deployment of 13,000 surveillance cameras across the state, provision of a metro network to connect all schools, hospitals, courts, police stations and other government facilities, unified communication systems for first emergency responders and provision of 4 G technology (a standard wireless communication of high-speed data for mobile phones and data terminals) as well as broadband deployment of fibers across the state,” he explained.

According to Odubiyi, the benefit of the Smart City project included the improvement of the security of the state via the deployment of 13,000 surveillance cameras, prompt and effective response to emergency issues by the first respondents, interconnectivity of all government public institutions, including schools, courts, hospitals and the increase in economic activities in the state.
