Students in higher institutions in Nigeria may soon begin to get loans from the federal government. That is if a bill currently before the national assembly, for the purpose, is passed.
The House of Representatives is planning a bill to make it easy for students to access loans
The bill for students to get loans to pursue their education scaled second reading on the floor of the House of Representatives on Tuesday.
The bill scaled second reading on the same day the members passed 13 bills within 20 minutes at the National Assembly in Abuja. The bills were passed after they were read a third time.
Sponsored by Femi Gbajabiamila, the bill for students’ loans is intended to provide students with easy access to funds for higher education.
Gbajabiamila noted that many students drop out of school because of lack of funds to pursue their education to graduation adding that the proposed law will encourage more Nigerian students to enroll into tertiary institutions.
To make the bill successful, the lawmaker from Lagos state canvassed for an education bank as well as that the loans be interest-free.

In his contribution, his colleague, Nnanna Igbokwe, who is at the House on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said the bill would provide more opportunities for Nigerian students if passed.
According to Vanguard, the legislator said: “More opportunities would be given to young Nigerians who are intelligent but are having financial constraints to continue with their education.”
The bill was unanimously approved by members who were present at the sitting while the speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara, referred the bill to the committee on tertiary education and services for further legislative actions.
Dogara, as reported by NAIJ.com, had earlier introduced electronic voting system in the conduct of activities of the House.
