Panic as soldier, policemen clash in banking hall
– A canister of tear gas was shot inside a banking hall following a dispute between a soldier and four mobile policemen in Calabar
– Armed mobile and regular policemen arrived the bank in trucks demanding for the soldier who was inside the bank
– A deployment of soldiers in trucks also arrived few minutes later and began sporadic shooting into the air, as on looking bystanders and passersby scampered for safety
A fight which broke out between a soldier and four mobile policemen inside a new generation bank in Calabar led to the disruption of activities at about 11am on Tuesday, May 31.

According to The Nation, a canister of tear gas was shot inside the filled banking hall, following the dispute, leading to pandemonium as customers fled the burning sensation.
Shortly after, armed mobile and regular policemen arrived the bank in trucks demanding for the soldier who was inside the bank.
Apparently responding to the call for backup from from the outnumbered soldier, a deployment of soldiers in trucks arrived a few minutes later and began sporadic shooting into the air, as on looking bystanders and passersby scampered for safety
After a while they all got inside the bank, to sort the issue, after which they got out and left in their vehicles.

In another development, the Nigerian army has explained why the soldiers were forced to kill pro-Biafran activists on May 30, Monday, The Cable reports.
Sani Usman, army’s spokesman, said in statement that the military shot protesters over “unwarranted attack, breach of peace and creation of wide spread panic, tension and apprehension”.
The Biafra group said that at least 30 protesters commemorating the 49th anniversary of the declaration of the defunct Biafra Republic by Odumegwu Ojukwu, were killed.
At the same time police said that five activists were shot dead while many others arrested.
