Music lovers, rejoice! Festival season is officially here. While Coachella always gets off to an early start with a little help from California sun, now that the unofficial start of summer has past and the East Coast is getting some swell weather, the music festivals will be going strong almost every weekend, starting with Governor’s Ball this Friday and Bonnaroo the following weekend.
To help prepare you for the imminent infusion of live music into the world, I’m breaking down some of the best records to add to your vinyl collection, by artists playing to the gathered crowds.
It’s always fun to know a few tunes before heading into a live performance, so to anyone attending Gov Ball this weekend, let this list be a guide to either further your enjoyment of the festival or help you make some tough decisions regarding scheduling conflicts between acts. And if you can’t make it to Randall's Island this weekend, just close your eyes, spin these records, and it’s almost like you’re there (without the brutal humidity).
"Is This It" by The Strokes
AmazonThe Strokes are the coolest band of all time. I am statistically uncool by all counts and even I know this to be true. While the band has been a bit on-again/off-again in recent years with regard to playing and making music together, their performance together at Gov Ball and their recent EP release give hope for more coolness to come in the near future.

"Every Open Eye" by CHVRCHES
Amazon“Every Open Eye” was probably my most spun record of 2015. The Scottish trio makes me dance like few other bands can, with the help of wild synth melodies and Lauren Mayberry’s bright, sweet voice. Tracks like “Clearest Blue” and “Never Ending Circles” show off the band’s ability to take sharp computer sounds and mold them into rallying cries.

"Live" by Gary Clark Jr.
AmazonI saw Gary Clark Jr. play for the first time at Governor’s Ball 2013. I was taking notes in a journal for a blog I would later write up about the day, and these are the words I wrote down while watching Gary Clark Jr. play to describe the sounds he was making with his guitar: Silly, Tasty, Astounding, Ridiculous, Jimi-esque, Filthy, Dirty, Beautiful. While his studio albums are fine, Gary Clark Jr. is a dish best enjoyed live, even when choosing your vinyl.
