Banker to spend 39 years behind bars for stealing from dead customer

– Seven bank workers conspired among themselves to steal over N30, 000,000 from the dead person

– One of them pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced today for 39 years in jail

Olawale Garuba, a worker of the unnamed bank, will spend 39 years in prison after being convicted of stealing over N30, 000,000 from the dormant account of a deceased customer.

The crime was brought to light by the bank authorities who discovered the fraud scheme arranged by some of its staff and proxies of the dead person.

The convict and his six colleagues were reported to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for investigation and soon were arraigned on conspiracy and fraud charges.

In July 2015 the detainees pleaded not guilty to 18 counts of fraud, were denied bail and remanded in prison custody. However, on June 2, 2016, Mr Garuba pleaded guilty and the case was adjourned till today for sentencing.

Premium Times reports that despite the banker was a remorseful first time offender with a wife and two young children Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye of the Lagos state High Court found him guilty on 13 of the eighteen counts on Thursday.

Mr Garuba wassentenced him to three years imprisonment on each count. The sentences are to run concurrently from the date of his first detention, which is July 24, 2015.
