ASDA’s La Moneda Reserva Malbec red wine, costing under a fiver at the British supermarket, has been named the best in the world at the world’s largest and most influential wine competition. The budget plonk which was blind taste tested by a panel of 240 experts, is marketed as dark and brooding, with a rich smooth and juicy blackberry, black cherry and damson fruit bouquet and flavor. The Independent reports: La Moneda Reserva Malbec from Central Valley in Chile (2015) was awarded best in show in the best single-varietal red under £15 at this year’s Decanter World Wine Awards, from 16,000 other entries. It was described as having “an excellent freshness” and a finish that was “full of energy”. Judges praised the wine for flavours of “freshly crushed black fruit, creamy vanilla yoghurt and pepper spice” and noted its good value.
