Srebrenica Massacre Remembered On 21st Anniversary

Thousands gathered in Srebrenica for the 21st anniversary of the worst massacre in Europe since World War II. Bosnian Muslim males of all ages were massacred by Serb forces who walked into a UN protected compound housing refugees and during a course of four days in 1995 annihilated 8,000 men and boys. Dutch UN peacekeepers held the population of Srebrenica in a protected zone, ready to be handed over to Serbian paramilitary forces who had besieged the quiet provincial town, nestled in a valley among mountains. Thousands of women and children were forced to watch their male relatives frogmarched to their executions in the forests and valleys beyond the camp. The UN and world powers allowed the drama of rape and mass execution play out for the world media to capture, while explaining their reasons for inaction as complications arising during the fog of war. For the victims and survivors of Srebrenica there was no fog 21 years ago. The UN peacekeepers kept the peace while the lamb were readied for the slaughter house.
