BREAKING: Second female prime minister emerges in Britain (photo)

Theresa May has emerged as Britain’s second female prime minister following the resignation of David Cameron.

May’s assertion to the position was confirmed following the traditional visit to the Queen to be invited to form a government.

May who has served Cameron as home secretary throughout his six years in government swept her party’s leadership position when her opponent, Andrea Leadsom’s dropped out.

The new prime minister is expected to make the first senior appointments to her government on Wednesday, July 13, including a minister for Brexit.

Cameron who had earlier congratulated May resigned following the Brexit vote which saw Britain leave the European Union despite the former prime minister’s campaign for the country to stay.

May’s visit to Queen Elizabeth signals her new position and is the second female prime minister in the country’s history after Margaret Thatcher.
