BBOG condemns Dino Melaye’s threat of violence against Senator Tinubu
– The altercation between Senators Oluremi Tinubu and Dino Melaye is still generating reactions
– Despite his denials, Senator Melaye has been a subject of criticism from various groups and organisations
– The latest group to air their opinion is the Bring Back Our Girls Group (BBOG), Lagos chapter
Nigerians were shocked yesterday, July 12, to hear and read the altercation between Senators Oluremi Tinubu and Dino Melaye during plenary.
Melaye representing Kogi West Senatorial District in the upper chamber, is a staunch supporter of Senate president, Bukola Saraki and has never hidden it.

He however threw caution to the wind during senators debate on the invitation of the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN) to answer queries on the Senate Rules Forgery which Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu are standing trial for.
According to reports, Melaye threatened to impregnate and beat up Remi Tinubu, adding that the Senate chamber is not bourdillon (referring to the home of Tinubu’s politician husband).

In a statement distributed to media houses, BBOG Lagos said: ”Yesterday, we were set back to the dark ages, where assault, abuse, battery, gender based violence and discrimination became the norm as we faced comments credited to Senator Dino Melaye.
”While the issues of the senate and their disagreements remain strictly their issue, it is pertinent to put an end to this recurring act of threat of violence against women.
”It is further disheartening that there is no indication to suggest that the leadership of the Senate has referred this weighty allegation for investigation by its Committee on Ethics and Privileges.”
The group urged the Senate to ”stop tolerating misogynists like Senator Dino Melaye in their ranks”, adding that ”the senator’s language is disgusting and it is important for the Nigerian Senate to make moves in words and action to put an end to this.”
The group expressed its concern that with senators like Melaye in the Senate, the Gender and Equal Opportunity Bill which they are campaigning for might never see the light of day.
”How can we encourage women to take elective positions without fear when the senate, which has only seven (7) female members out of the 109 members, has men like Senator Dino Melaye threatening the few that have dared the odds to get into politics?
”How can we put an end to violence against girls and women when those who lead/make these laws are guilty of the same acts? Are there no rules and code of conduct in The Senate? Are there no penalties for irresponsible behavior?”, the group queried.
