A woman from Enugu state has told the sad story of why people told her to throw away her son.
Edith Onyekachi who has two children said one of them was born with a hole in his heart. The young child is only three-years-old.
She explains that the boy Onyekachi Victor was first diagnosed at the national hospital after she noticed that his breathing was faster than normal and he was not growing normally. She noticed this when he was about a year old.

She also explained that he only started walking in February when he was about three years old. And due to the ailment, “a baby of one year and three months was bigger than him,” she explains.
The child’s ailment made it impossible for him to be enrolled in school like a normal child. It also made it impossible for her to get a job as a teacher, because he needed constant care and support round the clock.
The financial burden was so hard that people suggested that she throw away the child.
“My husband repairs radio and television sets and we spend more than N10,000 on drugs a month,” she said.

The situation, she said, had compelled her into begging for alms to take care of the child who is admitted at the national hospital almost every month.
“So people said I should throw him away and stop asking for help. We are suffering, we don’t have anything and I love him so much,” she said.
According to AllAfrica, the medical report signed by a chief consultant pediatrician at the national hospital Abuja, Dr. I.B Babaniyi, says the boy was presented at the national hospital when he was 13 months with complaints of fast breathing, fever, loose stool and vomiting of 11 days.
“He will need a definitive surgical intervention in two stages,” Dr. Babaniyi said in the report putting the total money required at over N4 million.
Also, the public relations officer of the national hospital, Dr. Tayo Haastrup, confirmed the authenticity of the medical report detailing the nature of the ailment and money required for the medical treatment abroad.
Meanwhile, Nigerian children continue to die every hour in IDP camps. This is despite the military reclaiming territory held by Boko Haram, the living conditions of the captives rescued from the terrorists’ hideouts have left many saddened.
The displacement of children from their homes is creating a huge problem for the region, as records show that northern Nigeria has the largest number of out-of-school children in Africa.
