Following reports that an army group in Turkey says it has taken control of the country with bridges closed in Istanbul, while aircraft are flying low over Ankara, Turkey’s capital, Ibtimes has made startling revelations.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim earlier denounced an “illegal action” by some military group stressing it was not a coup. He said that the government remained in charge.

Traffic has been stopped from crossing both the Bosphorus and Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridges in Istanbul, but here are five things you need to know about the events in Turkey as compiled by Ibtimes.

1. The prime minister, Yildirim does not agree that it is a coup. According to New York Times, he said: “Some people illegally undertook an illegal action outside of the chain of command.

“The government elected by the people remains in charge. This government will only go when the people say so.”

2. No airport in Turkey is working right now as all of them have been shut down.

3. Despite the coup plotted, the country retains all international agreements as a Turkish military statement read: “We hope that all of our good relationships with all countries will continue.”

4. Just as the military have taken over the affairs of the country. A statement by the military reads: “Turkish Armed Forces have completely taken over the administration of the country to reinstate constitutional order, human rights and freedoms, the rule of law and general security that was damaged.”

5. Hostages have also been taken as low flying jets and gunfire were heard near the capital city.
