Newspaper headlines for today, August 3 have focused on budget 2016 padding scandal rocking the House of Representatives, and the death of many locals in Adamawa and Kaduna states as Fulani herdsmen unleashed terror.
According to a report on Vanguard, at least 26 people were killed as gunmen suspected to be herdsmen allegedly invaded communities in Adamawa and Kaduna states, also injuring scores as many were declared missing.
While 15 persons were confirmed killed during the attack on Kodomun village and other adjourning villages in Demsa local government area of Adamawa state, 11 were slaughtered in three villages around Godogo town, in Jema’a local government area of Kaduna state, 250km South of Kaduna town.
Still on the killings of locals in Adamawa and Kaduna states, women of Ninte village in Godogodo chiefdom, Kafanchan area of Jema’a local government area of Kaduna state, yesterday, August 2, stormed palace of the Chief of Godogodo half-naked to protests alleged incessant night killings by Fulani herdsmen, The Sun reports.

The Ninte women, who were supported by others from surrounding villages who suffered same fate, arrived the palace in the wee hour demanding government’s prompt intervention over killings, rape, burning of houses by armed men suspected to be Fulani herdsmen which had been on the increase in recent times.
Moving away from the Fulani herdsmen attack in Adamawa and Kaduna states, the main headline on The Punch has shown how the All Progressives Congress has intervened in the crisis rocking the House of Representatives over alleged padding of the 2016 budget.
The APC was said to have made the move to prevent the party from being “brought to dishonour.”
The APC National Working Committee, at the party’s headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, August 2, separately met with the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara; and a former Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin.
It was gathered that the meetings were aimed at addressing the crisis and preventing the removal of Dogara.
Still on the 2016 budget padding scandal, The Nation reports that Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris has raised a five-man special team to probe the alleged padding of the budget by House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara and some of his principal officers.
As a follow up, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Amodu Ali-led Special Investigative Panel (SIP) invited Dogara, his deputy Yusuff Lasun, Chief Whip Alhassan Ado Doguwa and minority leader Leo Ogor to appear before it on Friday, August 5.

The panel yesterday had what was called “a preliminary session” with ousted House Committee on Appropriations chairman Abdulmumin Jibrin, who accused Dogara and others of padding the budget with N284 billion.
Moving away from the corruption allegations in NASS, The Guardian reports that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has presented food and non-food items to the Nigerian Army for distribution to 800 ‘repented and surrendered’ Boko Haram insurgents under the Operation Safe Corridor (OSC) programme of the military.
Presenting the relief materials in Gombe, the Director-General of NEMA, Alhaji Muhammad Sani Sidi said that the initiative was in line with international best practices. He said it was essentially to allow those who indulged in terrorism to voluntarily surrender and embrace peace, by undergoing rehabilitation and reintegration.
In other news, Complete Sports reports that Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi says he took a risk by opting to represent Nigeria in the football event of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, instead of staying for pre-season and fighting to impress new coach Antonio Conte – who has told the Nigerian to return to London with the gold medal.
The former Lyn Oslo player will captain the Nigeria U-23 side at the games.
