Joburg voting uneventful despite late starts
Voting seems to be running smoothly in Johannesburg despite some venues opening late.
|||Johannesburg - Voting seemed to be going ahead uneventfully at some venues in greater Roodepoort in Johannesburg.
One or two people trickled in to the St Andrews Catholic Church in Noordgesig over lunch time.
An IEC official, who did not want to be named, showed Independent Media the statistics for the day.
By 1pm only 202 of the 979 voters who had registered to vote at that venue had been there to make their mark.
A short distance away at Noordgesig Primary School, short queues formed outside different classrooms and people braced themselves against the gusty wind and flying dust.
Officials said that voting had only started at 8.15am, over an hour late, because they had struggled to set the ballot boxes up.
At Florida Primary School, a long queue doubled up on itself in a passage outside the school's hall.
Outside on the pavement, various political parties sat at tables and under gazebos wearing party T-shirts and plastered with party posters.
Officials said everything was running smoothly.
