IEC reports one problem with early WCape vote
The IEC said it was “relatively satisfied” with early voting in the Western Cape, with one significant problem picked up in Stellenbosch.
|||Cape Town - The IEC said it was “relatively satisfied” with early voting in the Western Cape as millions in the province headed to the polls early on Wednesday morning.
IEC provincial head Courtney Sampson said the only significant problem was picked up in Stellenbosch where the ballot papers of a ward in Cedeberg Municipality appeared on Tuesday during special voting, and on Wednesday morning.
Three special votes in Stellenbosch were affected by the bungle, and 30 earlier on Wednesday.
Sampson said the IEC had since corrected the problem.
“We needed permission from the IEC to print ballot papers because these are printed centrally.
“We've done the intervention, and it is under control at the moment,” said Sampson.
At Milnerton High School voters reported unusually long queues, and Sampson attributed this to scanner problems which have since been resolved.
“By 8am we were 100% open, and some of these instances could be attributed to staff arriving late,” said Sampson.
He said there were no reported issues around safety in and around polling stations.
