Cape Town - Voters got their ballots in early on Wednesday at Intshayelelo Primary School in Litha Park, Khayelitsha.

By 10am only around 20 people remained in the queue.

According to IEC elections volunteer, Aphiwe Mabumbulu, the voting station was “packed” in the morning and only quieted down at around 9am.

“Today’s voting session has been relatively quick and easy. As you can see there are not a lot of people in the lines. It was packed in the morning and by 9 there were about 50 people lined up.”

The voting process was smooth, he said, with voters seldom spending more than five minutes in the queue. Senior citizens were ushered by volunteers to the front of the queue.

“We take older people to the front because they can’t wait in long queues because of their age. Luckily for us, no one has objected to an older citizen overtaking them in the line.”

Silindile Nkosi, 42, was first told she was unable to vote as she wasn't registered at that polling station, but she was later allowed to cast her ballot.

“They told me I cannot vote here, but I have been voting here for the past three elections. Luckily they found my name and I was able to vote,” Nkosi said.

Members of the EFF, Cope, DA and ANC sat outside the school in a last bid to canvass for votes, as campaigning inside the voting precinct is not allowed.
