|||Johannesburg - Former president Kgalema Motlanthe was calm and relaxed as he stood in the long queue at the Killarney Country Club in Houghton while waiting for his turn to cast his vote.
Motlanthe, who arrived shortly after 11am along with his wife, Gugu, greeted and shared pleasantries with some ANC and City of Johannesburg officials, including mayor Parks Tau.
Motlanthe posed for a brief photo shoot and then walked up to the end of the 50m long queue, where he was flanked by his wife, city officials and bodyguards.
A man believed to be a presiding officer later approached him to ask if he would like to cast his vote quickly, but Motlanthe said he preferred to wait in the queue like the rest of the voters.
He later addressed journalists and told him it was the right thing for people to wait for their turn to vote, regardless of their social standing.
As Motlanthe was speaking, a man walked up to him and asked him “how do you sleep at night”. He was apparently referring to the corruption scandals that have been plaguing the ANC.
An unperturbed Motlanthe continued with his address as the man continued with his ranting.
Motlanthe emphasised the importance of voting in the local government.
When asked who he would vote for, Motlanthe said his vote was secret.
