Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, over the weekend, emerged as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), for the November 26, 2016 governorship election in Ondo state.

He was declared winner on Saturday, September 3, in Ondo state following the primary election held amidst tight security in the state capital, Akure.
Akeredolu defeated the anointed candidate of a national leader of the party, Dr Segun Abraham who polled 635 while Chief Olusola Oke came third, scoring 583. Senator Ajayi Boroffice came forth with 471 votes.
Here are some interesting facts about Mr Akeredolu:
1. Time as NBA president
He was the former president of the Nigerian Bar Association(NBA). He became president of the association 2008. In November 2009, he faced allegations of corruption.
The bar association’s third Vice-President, Welfare Secretary and Assistant Financial Secretary circulated a petition entitled “Complaints against your fraudulent manifestations, violation of the NBA”.
Subsequently, the allegations against him were reviewed and dropped by the National Executive council of the Nigerian Bar Association.
2. Family
Akeredolu was born into a highly spiritual family, his father was Reverend J. Ola Akeredolu of the Akeredolu family and his mother was Lady Evangelist Grace B. Akeredolu of Aderoyiju family of Igbotu, Ese Odo, in Ondo state.
He however toed a different path while growing up. When he went on to the then University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University to study, he chose law, graduating in 1977. He was called to the Nigerian Bar 1978.

3. Political career
He is no novice in political circles, he was the candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the 2012 governorship election.
His selection pitched him in a head to head battle with the incumbent, Olusegun Mimiko and Mr Olusola Oke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Akeredolu promised to create 30,000 jobs in his first 100 days in office. A fact which the PDP candidate challenged as a hoax.
4. Honor
Surprisingly, in 2012, the NBA named its new secretariat in Abuja after him with its president citing the reason being the need for “generational identification and recognition of those who had contributed immensely to the development of the association.
This came as a surprise after the accusations of corruption earlier leveled against him by the welfare secretary and assistant financial secretary.

5. Academics
Akeredolu is also respected in academic circles, he attended Loyola college in Ibadan and was appointed Attorney General of Ondo state from 1997–1999. In 1998 he became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).
Shortly after he lost the 2012 elections to Olusegun Mimiko, he relocated to Ondo state and tried to connect with the people in the grassroots level and also monitored the Mimiko government and their programs to help the people.
