The completion of the Abuja light rail project may be delayed due to the carting away of the communication cables laid on the rail line by thieves.
The project expected to provide alternative means of transport in Nigeria’s capital is at the mercy of vandals who have been digging and stealing the cables.

The minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Musa Bello, confirmed the development to Channels Television.

His words: “Cables are being vandalised. Two weeks ago, vandals dug out cables and cut them off.
“The cables, which have already been replaced, are to serve as tools for communication across the trains and various stations.
“The protection of the facilities is a responsibility of everyone. The government could not do alone.’’
The minister however assured members of the public that hmembers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have been deployed along the tracks and in the city.’
He also urged members of the public to be conscious and ensure that infrastructure put in place were not vandalised.
The estimated time for the completion of the Abuja light rail project is Saturday, December 31, 2017. The rail project is stretched from the airport to barracks.
Meanwhile, the minister has barred free grazing by Fulani herdsmen in the nation’s capital.
The minister directed the Abuja Environmental Protection Board and the FCT task team on environment to get rid of the herdsmen in Abuja.

In a related development, the FCT police command has nabbed six men who are part of a criminal group that is reportedly responsible for strings of robberies in Abuja.
The suspects ran into trouble when they hijacked 600 bags of rice worth N6million and sold 400 of them to one Abubakar Ishaku Gwagwalada at N7,000 per bag.
