|||Johannesburg - While many players move into defence in the latter stages of their careers, Platinum Stars captain Vuyo Mere is going the other way, happy to use his versatility for the team's cause.
Mere has for the bulk of his career operated as a marauding right-back; a solid defender and a player very capable of contributing in attack. He has however also played in midfield in years gone by and is now looking forward to resuming duties in the middle of the park for Dikwena this season.
“It's been a positive role for me. The coach saw that maybe I have got potential to play there in the middle. It's nothing new. I have played there before,” Mere told the club's official site. “I will take the opportunity with both hands. I will do what I do best. I am hoping I will improve on my performances,” said the 32-year-old, who made his PSL debut in the 2001/ 02 season with Hellenic.
So far Stars have won one game this season - beating SuperSport in the Absa Premiership, before losing to Chippa United in the MTN8. “It was positive start against SuperSport because we played against a team that was supposed to be one of the league contenders,” said Mere.
“We got the three points and we were looking forward to build on that but against Chippa it wasn't to be. We were disappointed. We had to go back to training and try rectifying our mistakes against Chippa. “The sooner we forget about Chippa the better. It was a good wake-up call. When we won against SuperSport we thought we would walk into the pitch and that everything was going to happen automatically. “We can now focus on the league. We can take the positives and improve on them.”
Stars are next in action on Wednesday, September 14, when they take on Kazier Chiefs at the FNB Stadium. - African News Agency (ANA)
