South Africa’s CPI quickens to 6.1%

SA’s headline consumer inflation quickened to 6.1% year-on-year in September from 5.9% in August.

Johannesburg - South Africa's headline consumer inflation quickened to 6.1 percent year-on-year in September from 5.9 percent in August, data from Statistics South Africa showed on Wednesday.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast CPI would come in at 6.2 percent.

On a month-on-month basis, prices were up 0.2 percent after a 0.1 percent contraction previously.

Core inflation, which excludes the prices of food, non-alcoholic beverages, petrol and energy, increased to 5.6 percent year-on-year, slowed slightly to 0.3 percent month-on-month from 0.2 percent.
