Federal Government would reconstruct North East through 3% VAT – Senator Nyako

Senator Abdul-Aziz Murtala Nyako representing Adamawa central senatorial district, has said that the 3% percent federal Value Added Tax (VAT) approved by the National Assembly  to the North-East development commission  was   for   rebuilding, reconstruction and rehabilitating infrastructures ravaged by the Boko Haram insurgency in the zone.

In a statement obtained by NAIJ.com, the said the 3% federal VAT for the commission got  Senate’s approval  because it is  a commission that will be  financed and regulated by the federal  government without  state or local government  interruption.

He explained that the federal vat is different from the national, state or local government and that the National Assembly within its ambit has the powers to approve the federal vats to NEDC because it is a commission  that  will be controlled by the  executives after President Muhammadu Buhari assents to  it.

“Senate was very critical in the consideration of approving this and looking at the circumstances with which the percentage was being canvassed, it leaves no one in doubt; hence, all of us were unanimous that it should be approved.

“Getting the right individuals with adequate capacity to work in the commission as well as establishing and implementing its budget will be the sole responsibility of the federal government without interference by  state and local government,” he said.

Nyako added that the federal government will be the one to carry out a comprehensive survey and data bank that will bring out a comprehensive master plan for rebuilding the North East ravaged infrastructure such as public schools, hospitals, worship centers, places of commerce and administrations.

The Nigerian Senate on Thursday, October 20, passed the North-east development commission bill seeking to revive the North east part of the country after being destroyed by Boko Haram insurgents.
