How more and more Nigerians are falling in love with this ‘strange’ genre of music
When it comes to music, Nigerians are pretty straight forward. If it can’t make us dance, then there is a high chance that the song won’t blow.
Asa is probably the most famous Nigerian alternative musician
By blow I mean, that radio stations won’t get to play it as much, DJ’s will ignore it and it will just die a slow death from the day you release it. This is also responsible for the number of ‘rubbish’ songs musicians these days put out all in the name of releasing the next party jam.

But in recent times, songs that don’t make one dance but on the contrary make us think are beginning to gain ground. These songs are usually tagged as Alternative songs. The tag ‘Alternative’ as regards the Nigerian sound is a source of debate from music lovers and critics alike. Some are of the opinion that any genre outside the more popular sounds mentioned above are to be considered alternative while others feel songs that are distinct in their use of live instruments should be considered as alternative songs. Artistes like Nneka, Asa, Brymo, Bez, Temi Dollface, A’rese, Aramide, Ayo Awosika, Kaline, Falana, Ruby Gyang are some of the major musicians whose songs fall into the alternative genre of music.
Brymo is another well regarded Alternative musician
This is probably what Smooth FM had in mind when they put together a show tagged A Night at the Kazbah with The Voice 2 winner A’rese , South African band Micasa and Jazz legend Jonathan Butler performing.

Getting to Federal Palace Hotel venue of the event, I was shocked at the turnout of people at the show. The hall was full to the brim! And I believe if not for the rain, more people would have attended the show. Honestly, for a show that advertised musicians that were not well known amongst the general populace, the turnout was impressive!
