PDP falls apart again as Sheriff, Makarfi return to war

– The warring PDP factions of Ahmed Makarfi and Ali Modu Sheriff are at each other’s throats again even as the party tries to reconcile the two sides

– Somebody from the Sheriff faction has threatened to enforce some court judgements that would throw out the Makarfi faction but the Makarfi group have dismissed the threat as an attempt at cheap publicity 

Hopes of the crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ending soon were dashed on Tuesday, October 25 after the two factions of senators Ahmed Makarfi and Ali Modu Sheriff returned to the trenches.

Both sides threw jabs at each other, with the Sheriff faction threatening to enforce a a court judgement that would throw out the Makarfi-led national committee.

The Markafi faction, which claims to be backed by law; the apparatus of the party and majority of the opposition party’s members, said the latest threats were moves by some unknown persons to undermine the reconciliation process between the two factions.

The party made its position known in a statement released late on Tuesday and signed by Adm. Chinwe I. Nnorom, its head of Publicity Division to continue the PDP crisis.

The statement read: “Our attention has been drawn to a statement credited to an unknown quantity in the name of one Hon. Bernard Mikko purporting to be the Acting National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“While we be duty bound not to dignify him by replying to all the points raised in his statement, we wish to however clarify that the National Caretaker Committee of the Party is a creation of the National Convention, the highest decision making body of the PDP and it’s so recognized by the Courts of Competent Jurisdiction.

“We won’t therefore exchange words with self-appointed members of a non-existent National Working Committee; and for the umpteenth time, we wish to re-iterate that at least ninety per cent of members of the former National Working Committee are all cooperating with the National Caretaker Committee led by H. E. Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi, CON.

“The threat of issuing form 48 and 49 by this unknown person is stupid and ridiculous. For emphasis, there are several Judgments of Courts nullifying the appointment of the former National Chairman, and directing him not to continue parading himself as Chairman of the PDP; but the former Chairman is in violation of these Judgments for which Form 48 could be issued against him.

“Notwithstanding, we want to believe that this unknown individual is acting on a personal agenda to gain very cheap political favour from Senator Sheriff’s Group especially, given the on-going reconciliation processes with Senator Makarfi and Senator Sheriff in the interest of our great Party.

“To this end, the leadership of the Party remains resolute to embrace those who genuinely seek peace for our great Party, the PDP. We call on all our members’ nationwide, teeming supporters and the general public to continue supporting the leadership of the Party under the Chairmanship of Sen. Makarfi to move the Party forward.”

Meanwhile, the PDP has warned the President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government to ensure that former aviation minister Femi Fani-Kayode must not die in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The opposition party issued this warning in a statement signed and released by its national publicity secretary Prince Dayo Adeyeye.
