Finance Minister decries corruption in customs
The minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, has criticized the high of corruption in customs and other agencies, Daily Post reports.
Speaking to the Senate committee on finance, who were on oversight visit to her ministry, she described some of the staff of Nigerian Customs Service, as “cohesive crooks hard to break.”
Senator Hope Uzodinma, a member of the committee and Chairman, Senate committee on customs complained that the ministry under her watch has given sufficient attention to revenue-generating agencies, particularly the customs.

In response, Mrs Adeosun said that government’s efforts of realizing money from such agencies were being vulnerable by high-level corruption.
She further described some staff of Nigerian Customs Service, as “cohesive crooks hard to break.”
Adeosun also told the Nigerian Senate that the federal government will maintain it’s over N6 trillion national budget in the 2017 appropriation bill.
She said government still spends more on salaries, pension and debt services, than on capital projects.
The Senate committee Chairman, John Owan Enoh, told the minister that their visit was based on a collective decision by the Senate to visit all ministries departments and agencies of government.
“Our hope is that apart from giving us some highlights of the implementation of the Ministry of Finance budget in the year 2016, the minister would also throw some highlights on some of the things that she feels the committee should know, especially the performance of our economy.
“This is October, the Medium Term Expenditure Framework is already sent to the National Assembly for approval so that the 2017 budget can come. We have a few revenue challenges, most of all is the performance of the independent revenue of government,” he said.
